Papagaj - meaning parrot in Montenegrin - is a cosy seaside restaurant and cafe just outside of Herceg Novi in Djenovici. Djenovici lies about 10 minutes from Herceg Novi towards Kotor and is super easy to find when coming from Herceg Novi. When on the main road just look for the big billboard with the parrot in Djenovici and turn down towards the sea.
Although Herceg Novi has some great restaurants in the centre, this place is worth the short drive out of town.
Don't get me wrong, I love, love, love traditional Montenegrin food - be it coastal seafood or mountain comfort food - but sometimes we all need a change!
My peeps enjoying a visit in the Montenegrin sun.
If you've been gorging yourself on cevapi, calamari and olive oil and are looking for a change, Papagaj could be just the place for you.
Not to mention their seaside location means you can soak up the chilled Djenovici atmosphere while you tuck into a tuna steak and a cold Niksicko beer.
This restaurant is the kind of place that has complete dedication to their menu and it shows. It's also the kind of place that closes when the Rolling Stones come to town so that the staff can go to the concert. I think it's that uncompromising dedication that makes this restaurant stand out from the crowd.
Their menu of classic Montenegrin dishes like black risotto, combined with more adventurous fare (for Montenegro) like goat cheese and pear salad is a winning combination that will refresh your palate.
We chose a Montenegrin proscuitto and cheese platter which was absolutely delicious. This was accompanied by a box of delicious, hot bread sticks that were so moreish we had to keep reminding ourselves to save space for our mains.
As well as traditional dishes like this, black risotto and fish soup, we've enjoyed perfectly done steaks, tuna, chicken dishes and salads. They also have a selection of pizzas which are the best I've had in Montenegro.
I'm trying to work my way through the dessert menu but I just can't seem to get past the Tom Waits cake - a very rich chocolate tart with berry coulis.
There are a lot of reasons why we keep coming back here:
