Surrounded by palaces in the heart of Kotor's medieval old town, could Hotel Villa Duomo, Kotor, Montenegro be the right hotel for your stay in Montenegro?
Hotel Villa Duomo lies in the heart of Kotor old town, on St Tryphon’s Square. Named for St Tryphon’s Cathedral, one of Kotor’s top attractions, the square was once surrounded by palaces, with Drago Palace, the bishopric and Vrakjen Palace all nearby.
Hotel Villa Duomo was also the home of a noble family in Kotor, and that ambiance has been carried through the property as it’s been transformed to a four star hotel in one of Montenegro’s most popular destinations.
Exposed stone walls, sleigh beds and period-style furniture give you the distinct feel you’re in the house of a 19th century noble.
As with any hotel in Kotor old town, the location is fantastic. You’re enveloped in a 15th century Venetian town and the atmosphere is undeniable. No matter where you go in Kotor, your attention is drawn to Gothic architecture, baroque palaces and even early Christian churches.
The old town is also a convenient base from which you can explore the bay of Kotor and beyond.
There are regular walking tours in the old town, the fun Kotor Secret City Trail, or you can explore on your own self-guided walking tour. And you’ll find a wealth of things to do, like visiting nearby Perast and boat tours to the Blue Cave. You’ll also have restaurants, bars and nightlife within a few steps of your hotel.
The potential downside of staying in the old town is that you’ll have the noise of tour groups and those bars to contend with. At Hotel Villa Duomo, you will also have St Tryphon’s bells ringing every hour, but you might find that adds to the ambiance rather than takes away from it.
The old town is pedestrian only, so if you hire a car you'll have to park it in one of the car parks outside the town, which cost around 80c per hour. With all the tours from Kotor old town, you can easily plan a stay without a rental car. The Great Montenegro Tour and North Montenegro Tour cover many of the highlights of Montenegro in just a day each.
One of Hotel Villa Duomo's major advantages is its beautiful terrace. Having breakfast on this terrace, overlooking the square, is a real treat in a town where outdoor areas are a rarity.
The hotel only serves breakfast, which gives you a chance to try some of the restaurants in Kotor, and it means the terrace is available as a picturesque spot to relax throughout the day and night.
Hotel Villa Duomo has 13 apartments to choose from. You can choose from studio, one and two bedroom apartments ranging from 33 to 73m2.
The apartments are filled with comfortable, hand-crafted furniture that brings the atmosphere of the Venetian town into your room. The exposed stone walls and wooden beams add to the character and blend in with your view of Kotor’s stone buildings and piazzas.
The rooms come with all the comforts you'd expect of a four star hotel – WiFi internet, dvd players and cable tv as well as air-conditioning to keep you cool in summer.
The other major advantage of Hotel Villa Duomo is its lift. A lot of the accommodation in Kotor has several flights of stairs, making it unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues. If that's you, Hotel Villa Duomo would be a good option because of its lift.
