Lake Skadar Wine Tasting And Gastronomy Tours

Experiencing a Lake Skadar wine tasting or gastronomy tour is a really unique and special treat when visiting Montenegro.

This is the place where you can experience some of the delicious, home-made food and drink that Montenegrins have been serving to honoured guests for centuries.

In Montenegro food is love.

With its Mediterranean climate, Montenegro is abundant all year round. A visit in warmer months months serves up tiny, wild strawberries; plump, red tomatoes and stone fruit, which leave juice running down your arm with every delicious bite.

In winter, apples, nuts and kiwifruit accompany carefully cured meats and fresh cheeses.

Every season has its harvest, and a visit to a local winery will offer you a taste of Montenegro's landscape, heritage and culture.

The Lake Skadar region has some of the most naturally fertile soil in Europe. And it's home to an incredible 111 wineries, most of the boutique-family run wineries.

Organic produce is grown in abundance in the surrounding valleys and the area is also home to Montenegrin wine country and its signature Vranac grape.

Montenegro wineLake Skadar boasts some of the most fertile vineyards in the Balkans

The wine producers in this region are award-winning, and nearby you'll find Europe's single largest vineyard, belonging to Plantaze, Montenegro's largest wine producer. Even more impressive is the fact that you can pick up a bottle of excellent Vranac here for as little as €2 plus change.

It's little wonder Virpazar, the gateway town to Lake Skadar, is home to a yearly festival dedicated to local wine and bleak, a lake fish. Local wine producers come here to showcase their wines and it's an excellent opportunity to try some. You can find out current details about the festival on their Facebook page.

Montenegrin restaurants have some luscious dishes on offer, like melt-in-your-mouth roasts called sač and fresh seafood infused with garlic and wine, but to experience real, traditional Montenegrin fare, you have to visit the families.

How can you do that during your visit to Montenegro?

Easy! I've arranged some Lake Skadar wine tasting tours with local families that will allow you to try the very best of Montenegrin wine, spirits and cuisine.

These Lake Skadar wine tasting and gastronomy tours are authentic local experiences where you'll visit the very best local producers and home cooks, all of whom adhere to centuries-old organic principles. Almost everything you will eat or drink has been home-grown, home-reared, home-made or home-caught - and believe me, you can taste the difference!

As well as wine and food, Montenegrin wineries make their own brandy called rakija. Rakija is a must-try during your stay in Montenegro. Rakija is traditionally made with grapes and is extremely potent - you have been warned! You'll also find other brandy varieties made with other fruit like pears or cherries.

All of these tours are arranged with local families of the Lake Skadar Valley area so you'll have the most authentic Montenegrin experience imaginable!
