Green Card

by Evan
(Modena)

Hi Sarah!

Sorry for bothering but I can't find clear information about the green card.

I will travel in August throughout the Balkans in my own car.

My car insurance has green cards valid for the majority of the countries but for MNE there is a cross, meaning Montenegro is not covered :(

Can I do the additional insurance at the border HR/MNE?

Is it still 15EUR for 15 days?

If I leave the country and then I come back will it still be valid?

Is it possible to do this insurance in advance via the web for example?

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help!

Your website gave me many ideas to visit Montenegro :)

Evan

Obtaining a green card in Hani i Hotit Border
by: Paco

Hi,
we are getting into Montenegro through the Hani i Hotit border from Albania with a rental albanian car.

Is it a Sava office also in that border to obtain the green card?
Does it also cost 15 euros for 15 days?

And another question, when you say you buy the green card in the border, is it in the same border, when showing the passports, or just before or after?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Green Card for Rental car at border
by: Bharat

Hi Sarah,

Is it still possible in 2023 to rent a car from any rental company but pay the green card fee 15 EUR for Green insurance card at the Montenegro border, instead of paying 80 EUR to Car rental company, which is insanely high just to cross the border and come back same day.

I am skeptical to think if rental company would force me to buy the cross border insurance for 80 EUR before they will give me the car keys.

Appreciate your response.

Green Card NEW
by: Sarah

The office hours for buying border insurance are 7am to 7pm daily.
At the moment it's not sold online, but I'd recommend contacting Sava Osiguranje (sava.co.me) to ask.

Happy travels,
Sarah

Paying the insurance at the border
by: Sarah

Hi Louise,

That idea does work in theory. You can definitely buy insurance at the border for a rental car.

The only issue will be whether or not the rental car agency will give you the car at all if they know that you plan to leave Croatia with it.

It seems that rental car agencies in Dubrovnik have decided to take advantage of the number of people flying into Dubrovnik and heading for Montenegro (I won't comment here on why people might choose to do that ;-)) and have started charging a daily fee for the green card. They buy this green card on a yearly basis and it covers the car for all the surrounding countries, including Montenegro. It's something they have to have for their cars anyway, so it seems opportunistic that they're charging people for it on top of the rental fee, and charging so much.

I think you'll love it here in September. It's my favourite month here. I'm sure you have already, but make sure you plan a visit to Zabljak/Durmitor National Park and add Biogradska Gora, Lovcen and Skadar Lake National Parks too if you can. The people in the north are so authentic, honest and welcoming.

I haven't been to Sydney for about 12 years, but I used to live in Bondi. Sydney's such a great place!

Happy travels fellow adventure lady!

Paying the insurance at the border
by: Louise

Hi Sarah
Many thanks for all your information.
Will be picking up a rental car in Dubrovnik for 11 days & dropping off in Zagreb. I have been reading many sites about this green card/cross border card. I hate being ripped off by these car rental companies...happy to pay the extra for the one-way rental, but am going to risk not paying extra for the card for my few days in Montenegro.

I will have a signed car rental contract ( which may have different wording than the voucher from the car broking firm). So as long as the contract doesn't does exclude Montenegro, should I be able to buy the extra insurance from the correct border you mention in your guide? 15 Euro is much cheaper than what rental companies charge.
Will be arriving in mid-Sept....from your guide I may want to spend all my 11 days there & none in Croatia! I'm an adventure lady from Sydney (still young at heart) who loves to hike & ski.

CONFIRM!
by: Anonymous

I was able to chat with a person from Sava Osiguranje online (they have chat on website and they speak perfect english!!!)
They confirmed what you wrote.
I was baffled because google maps is reporting a bank at the border control (Prva banka) and also from google street view you can see the red logo of the bank.
But it's is an older photo I guess (2016), the lady from Sava showed me the updated photo and there is the green logo.
I updated google maps hopefully they will accept my edit.

Thank you Sarah!

Sava Office
by: Sarah

Hi Evan,

It's right by the border. If you look on Google Maps, there are four smaller buildings marked around the actual border checkpoint. It's in the largest of those buildings.

Happy travels,
Sarah

Sava office
by: Anonymous

Thank you Sarah.
I found Debeli Brijeg on google maps:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Border+crossing+Debeli+Brijeg/@42.4809734,18.4545948,17.35z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x134c3cce80a97457:0x2600ad515335f0a2!2s20218,+Vitaljina,+Croatia!3b1!8m2!3d42.4415921!4d18.4794743!3m4!1s0x134c3dac9cdf47d3:0x4847b06c5571fb0c!8m2!3d42.4810268!4d18.4558243!5m1!1e4

but cannot find the Sava office.
Is it near the border or just after it, in the next closest city?

Thank you very much for your precious and quick help!!!

Green Card
by: Sarah

Hi Evan,

You can buy the green card at the border when you enter Montenegro. You'll need to make sure you come through the Debeli Brijeg border and not through Vitaljina. As you cross the border you'll go to the Sava insurance office and buy the insurance policy there. The border guards will show you where it is.

The price is 15 euros for 15 days and you can leave the country and re-enter in that time and the insurance is still valid.

Unfortunately, there's no way to do it online at the moment.

I'm so glad you're finding Montenegro Pulse useful. Have a great trip!

Happy travels,
Sarah
