Short-term Car Insurance

by Jack
(United Kingdom)

Hi Sarah.

Can you please advise where/how is the best way to buy a temporary car insurance to cover our stay in Montenegro please? Unfortunately my current car insurer covers me with the Green Card up to Croatia. We will be driving from Dubrovnik to Budva on the 19.08 and then to Ulcinj where we will be staying till 28.08 and on this day we will set off back. I will be very grateful for your help.

Thank you.

Border insurance
by: Steve B

Hi Hafsah, I have just returned from a trip from the UK to Montenegro with my car. My UK comprehensive insurance policy does not cover Montenegro (it does cover Bosnia and Serbia oddly). I crossed from Bosnia to Montenegro at Sitnica, where I was told that I couldn't buy insurance. They told me it was available at the Debeli Brijeg crossing from Croatia only. They didn't stop me entering the country, so I took a chance and continued, knowing I wasn't insured, and purchased a policy at an insurance company office (UNIQA) at the first major town I passed (Tivat) rather than diverting to Debeli Brijeg. The policy cost 15 euros and was valid for 15 days, and provided legal minimum third party cover. However, the policy didn't start until the following midnight so I remained uninsured for a few more hours. Another thing to note is that it was not possible to buy a comprehensive policy covering theft or damage to my own car - it is only a third party policy. This left me nervous the whole time as my car is fairly valuable and I was risking total loss without cover – for example if stolen, or damaged whilst parked and unattended, I wouldn’t have had any insurance coverage at all. Since returning to the UK I've looked into this further as I intend to go to Montenegro again, and I can only find one company in the UK (Sterling) offering a green card third party policy for UK registered cars for Montenegro. I still cannot find anywhere to get a comprehensive policy which covers Montenegro for a UK registered car.

Travel insurance from any border crossing?
by: Hafsah

Hi there!

On 29/30th July I'm entering Montenegro via Bosnia. I also have my own car from the UK.

Can I buy this temporary insurance at any or all border crossings into Montenegro? Or only Debeli Brijeg?

What documents do we need and how long does it usually take?

Thank you :-)

Hi Jack,

You can buy car insurance for Montenegro at the Debeli Brijeg border crossing when you enter Montenegro. The price is 15 euros for 15 days.

Happy travels,
Sarah
