Holiday in Montenegro

by Anna
(Norway)

Hi Sarah!

My family and I are travelling to Herceg Novi this summer. But we have some problems finding out about attractions and places to visit. We have rented a car we can use the first 7 days. So far we have found these locations and activities:

-Kotor
We are planning to spend a day in Kotor. Should we get there by car or boat? And how should our day look like when we want to experience the old town, but also take a swim throughout the day? Is there something we can’t miss while in Kotor?

-Rafting in the Tara river
Our first thought was to drive to the river in our own car, I’ve heard the trip there offers beautiful scenery. But who should we contact, what about equipment, food throughout the day, parking .... etc. Do you have some recommendations?

-Caves at Lustica Peninsula
We are planning on taking the full day boat trip from Herceg Novi. Are there any possibilities to explore more of Lustica Peninsula besides this one boat trip? And do you recommend some less touristy and “unknown” swimming/snorkeling locations there? (Are the boat trips from Kotor a better option to explore more places in the Peninsula?)

-Daytrip to Dubrovnik

-Hopefully we will find some boat trips through some of the main attractions and villages in the bay (Like Perast, maybe Dobrota, some beaches etc...) Some suggestions?

Sorry if this question was too long or comprehensive. Thank you for any help you can offer.

-Anna

Holiday in Montenegro

Hi Anna,

Here are my thoughts:

- Kotor
Drive around the bay from Herceg Novi to Kotor, this will give you a lot more flexibility.
I recommend doing Kotor Walking Tour while you're there and climbing San Giovanni Fortress. You could also do a speed boat tour to Our Lady of the Rocks and the Blue Cave. If you don't do the speed boat tour, you can stop in Perast and catch a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks from there. You can swim at any of the little beaches around the bay before or after exploring Kotor.

- Tara Rafting
You can find out about rafting and book with my preferred partner
here. Driving yourself up there is great, you have a lot of freedom to stop wherever you like and take photos. Equipment is always included with your tour, as are breakfast and lunch usually. With your own car you can take snacks and there's always parking onsite.

- Lustica Peninsula
You can drive yourselves around to Lustica Peninsula. If you take the standard all-day boat trip, you'll go to the Blue Cave and Zanjice Beach and that's it. To see more, you'll need to
hire a boat to take you to other parts of the peninsula. We love Dobra Luka for snorkelling and the two little beaches there. You can only get there by boat, so it's never busy. We also love Uvala Vesla, which you can get to by car via Kamp Begovici.
The main difference between the boat tours from Kotor and Herceg Novi is the ones from Kotor are speed boat tours that take three hours. The tours from Herceg Novi are in slow boats and take all day, but you have the afternoon on the beach. The speed boat tours don't include any beach time.

- Day Trip to Dubrovnik
My advice: leave very early in the morning. It's not far from Herceg Novi to the border, so try to be there before 7am. After that the queues will be very long. We are currently down to one border (usually we have two) and are expecting long wait times this summer. Take supplies with you for the return journey too - just in case. It's impossible to predict, sometimes you're through in 20 minutes, sometimes 3 hours.

- Boat Trips
You can take the scheduled, group boat tour to the Blue Cave, that also includes a stop at Our Lady of the Rocks in Perast. If you want a different itinerary you can book a private boat tour to take you wherever you like.

Happy travels,
Sarah
